Former Republican Rep. Charlie Bass’ service in Congress can be called many things (“disingenuous” and “Bush-enabling” being my top two), but you've gotta give the Bassmaster some credit where credit is due for some straight-up honesty:
Charlie Bass, who lost to Hodes last year after serving five terms, isn't sounding like a candidate for a rematch.
“Life after Congress is not bad,” said Bass, now executive director of the Republican Main Street Partnership, a Washington-based organization focused on getting moderate Republicans elected.
“I haven't ruled anything out, but, frankly, I think that if the election were held today, the outcome might be worse for me than it was last November. I'm not making any decisions at this point.” (emphasis added)
Couldn’t have said it any better myself, Charles.
(H/T: Dean Barker)
Bass lost to Hodes by eight points, a landslide for an incumbent. You don’t come back after losing by that kind of margin.
Seriously, I know it’s still early and I’m knocking on wood here, but there’s no challenger in sight as far as I can see for NH-02.
And even crazier than that, the only other big name Republican right now, state HHS sec John Stephen, will be primary-ing Jeb Bradley in NH-01 for Carol Shea-Porter’s seat, instead of going after Gov. Lynch and his skyrocketing approvals.
Suddenly a once dominant NH GOP seems to be fielding the weakest crop of candidates.
And when Judd Gregg
runs for re-electionretires (I predict) in 2010, I can think of lots of strong Dems to take him on, but no one on the GOP side to replace him.…do you think? i’d love to see a senator carol shea porter, but i don’t know if one really amazing fluke and whatever happens in 08 will be enough for her to run for senate. this is of course assuming that lynch either stays as gov, or doesn’t want the job either way. if carol gets a moderate to strong re-election she’d certainly have a chance, and i think she’d make a great senator.
